Tooth decay is the most common disease affecting the tooth. Decay occurs when the plaque, which is the sticky substance that forms on the teeth combines with the sugars or starches of the food that we eat. Their combination along with the bacteria produces acid which attack the tooth.

If the decay is in the superficial layer without any symptoms, it can be treated by removal of the decay followed by a restorative cement filling. However if the decay reaches the innermost layer that is the pulp which is rich in nerves and blood vessels a root canal treatment has to be performed.
